From bold to... boring?

PayPal loses their identity

Happy Friday!

Welcome back to TWID — the only design newsletter on the internet that will have you thinking about your least favorite payment platform’s brand refresh as you head into the weekend.

We will keep it light. Don’t want to anger the mafia. Here’s what happened this week in design.

PayPal gets the brand refresh that no one asked for

PayPal ditches their 20+ year run with their iconic blue, with a brand refresh from Pentagram.

Oh — and they ditched the rounded corners for sharp edges!

The reason for the refresh and losing the blue? A strategic move to stand out from the newer incumbents who are also using blue. Ironically… they now look like every other big tech logo.

PayPal… you owned the blue.

From Diagram to Mainframe

After securing yet another amazing Twitter (err.. X) handle, Jordan Singer is starting another company just a few weeks after leaving Figma.

Mainframe is an operating system with AI as the default with the mission of changing the world's relationship with computers.

Mainframe follows Diagram (acq by Figma), another AI-focused company that Jordan presumably only started because he was able to get the one-word @diagram handle.

Watch this space… he’s building another idea.

What else happened this week in design?

Cosmos releases Infinite Canvas. Brb while I think about space and what infinite truly means…

Figma reveals a refresh that actually made the design world smile — complete with a Times Square takeover.

Linear releases their mobile app and it looks so good that I almost want to create a few tickets over the weekend.
